How-to-make-changes-that-stick-and-transform-your-life

Dr Mani Sivasubramanian and I connected a few years ago. He is a Heart Surgeon, Author, Internet marketer and so much more. He kindly offered to write a blog for me, so I requested one from him on making changes that stick and change your life. I am grateful to him for this.

As a medical student, I was on my way to the hospital cafeteria when I spotted him.

He was squatting on the floor in a quiet spot, around the corner of a building. Lying on the ground beside him were a pair of crutches. In his stub-like fingers, he grasped a cigarette.

I watched in horrified fascination as he drew the smoke deep into his lungs, held it there, eyes closed in bliss… before letting it out in a long sigh.

Why was the sight so repulsive?

Because just a few days back, I had presented Kris’ problem at our surgery clinic. His name was Krishnamachari Kondaraiya Devendiran – Kris, for short. He was thirty-five years old. And he was suffering from a disease that was as much a tongue-twister as his name… Thrombo Angitis Obliterans, or TAO.

It was a condition which narrowed down his arteries, slowly cutting off blood supply to the limbs, until there wasn’t enough oxygen to support them. Two years ago, he had developed gangrene of his left leg – and it had to be amputated.

A few months later, his fingertips turned black, too. One of them dried, and dropped off. Another three needed surgical removal.

And now he was in hospital because his other leg was affected. He was going to have an operation to remove it shortly!

TAO is a rare disease of uncertain cause. Only one thing is known about it. All patients are heavy smokers. Continued use of tobacco worsens the situation. Kris knows all of this. Surely, he would have been told during his previous hospital admissions. Earlier in the week, I had personally spent five minutes explaining it to him.

He nodded in understanding.

Yet here he was, leaning against the wall of a building which housed the operation suite where he’d lose his only remaining leg…

SMOKING!

That is how hard it is to break a habit.

Or to form a new one.

The Resistance Is Alive And Well

Around October-November every year, enthusiasm and excitement reach a feverish peak as millions all over the world start planning their New Year resolutions.

  • To get more exercise.
  • Lose some weight.
  • Learn a new skill or hobby.
  • Eat healthy food.

  • To save more money.
  • Make new friends.
  • Take up a hobby.

These are just among the more popular ones.

And they are all worthy goals to set, and strive for. Yet the disappointing reality is that even before January is over, most of these well-intended resolutions have been abandoned – forever!

The reason for this behavior has been well researched. And it can be attributed to one overwhelming factor – The Resistance.

Inside each of our minds or brains is a braking mechanism that kicks in every time you want to try something new. Or different.

That’s not a bad thing at all. In fact, it has survival value.

Imagine a farmer, from long, long ago, suddenly getting it into his head that he’s going to try a new method of planting seeds or tilling his land. If his idea doesn’t work, there are dire consequences – for himself, his family, and anyone else who depended on his harvest.

So nature intended for us all to have a built-in cautionary mechanism – that discourages us from doing anything different or new.

The Resistance.

It’s single, obsessive task is to stop you when you try!

And it is a devious devil, that knows and understands you well enough to succeed almost every time.

  • It plays to your fears and anxieties.
  • It puts down your strengths.
  • It erodes your confidence.
  • It sparks controversy.
  • It seeds doubt and uncertainty.

Until you throw up your hands, give up on trying to change, and settle back into a rut of comfort, constancy – and commonness!

How Can You Beat It – Every Time?

It ain’t easy… but it can be done.

It begins by understanding your situation, when you try to build a new habit.

You’re weak. You’re vulnerable. You’re extremely likely to lose.

You’re in the position of somebody who carries a knife to a gunfight!

And that itself is NOT the problem. For most habit-formers, the real problem lies in failing to realize how tough the challenge ahead is. Once you become aware of it, and accept it, half the battle is won.

Because what would you do if you’re carrying a knife to a gunfight? Adopt a different strategy to win, right?

Surely you wouldn’t hurl abuse at your opponent while you’re still 50 feet away. Or stomp up to them waving your switchblade about. Or take on a threatening posture and attitude from more than arm’s reach.

No. That would be suicide!

To have a chance at success in this unequal fight, you’d have to play to your strengths. Get in close. Be within the enemy’s reach. Only then can your knife wield any power, give you an edge, serve as your advantage.

In the same way, to break a bad habit or develop a good habit, you’d have to work with a strategy that maximizes your chances of success – and overcomes the Resistance that lives inside your head.

Several approaches work to achieve this end. In my latest book ‘Knife At A Gunfight‘, I get into more detail in one of the five modules about forming new habits. But let’s discuss one of them now.

How Do You Eat An Elephant?

You’ve probably heard a series of bad jokes about elephants.

Q: How do you put an elephant into a matchbox?
A: Open the matchbox. Put the elephant in!

Q: How do you put ANOTHER elephant into the same matchbox?
A: Open the matchbox. Take out the first elephant. Put the other one in!

Q: How do you eat an elephant?
A: One bite at a time!

Okay, okay. I’ll stop with the silly jokes.

Except… they’re all not “silly”.

Particularly the last one. Just as long as you don’t take it too literally.

Think of the ‘elephant’ as a metaphor for a BIG challenge. A complicated task, maybe. Or a project with many phases or stages. Even forming a new habit, or breaking an old one.

What’s the best way to “eat an elephant”?

Take one bite at a time!

In other words, break down the process, or project, or task, or challenge into bite-sized smaller bits that are easier to deal with.

This principle lies at the heart of an effective trick to habit-forming. And to explain how it works, I’ll use an example. Let’s imagine you want to read more – and decide that in the coming year, you’ll read at least one book every month.

That’s a great goal to shoot for. But if you don’t read regularly now, it’s a huge challenge that you’ll very likely fail to overcome. Unless you use this ‘Knife At A Gunfight’ approach.

How To Build A Reading Habit

Your inner resistance will rebel if you decide to suddenly start reading for a couple of hours daily.

It will say:

You can’t afford to waste so much time!
You have other important things to do!
You’ll get bored at reading so much!

It will ask:

You’ve never read in your life – why start now?
What makes you think you’ll be able to do this?
Are you sure there’s any real benefit from it?

Dozens like them will pop up in your mind. And like dripping water slowly wears away even hard, mighty rock, these comments and questions will erode your determination and will power – until you abandon your plan and give up.

But what if you start out by reading for just 5 minutes a day?

Wait! Before you argue there’s absolutely no point in reading for such a little time anyway, I’ll let you in to a secret.

You’re not going to read “just for 5 minutes” – forever!

No. You only begin at this point to overcome the Resistance. You’re tricking it into letting you get closer – where your knife becomes a powerful weapon, even in a gunfight!

None of the “reasonable” objections your mind can make to reading for hours and hours will sound that way when applied to reading for five minutes.

So your Resistance grows weak. And you can get started with developing your new habit.

In fact, there are a few preparatory steps you’ll have to take even before you reach this point… and I get into them in my book. But trust me – a strong Resistance can figure out ways to stop you from reading for even a measly five minutes. And you need ‘advanced’ strategies to beat it at that game!

Anyway, if you get going and manage to read for five minutes daily, you’ll notice something happen. You get comfortable with that new activity. It becomes routine. You do it automatically. And you don’t feel any reluctance or hesitation when you do.

You’ve taken the ‘first bite’ of your ‘elephant’.

Next, you increase the time by another five minutes. Wait until it, too, becomes routine and automatic. Then gradually step it up a bit further.

One bite after another.

That’s the only way to eat an elephant!

You Can’t Afford To Slip Or Slide Back

Another pitfall to forming new habits is the risk of sliding back into your comfortable old rut of familiarity.

Most people under-estimate the time it takes to build new habits. You may have heard different periods recommended as being the “bare minimum to form a habit”.

Well, they are all wrong!

You’ll have to work at forming – and keeping – habits for the rest of your life.

Yes, there’s no end-point. It’s a continuous, ongoing battle with your inner resistance.

And you’ll never have a better weapon than your trusty little knife in this gunfight.

But when you know how to wield it effectively, that’s enough to win.

Every time.

So go on and make your New Year resolutions. But this time, decide you’re going to keep them – not just until the end of January, but for as long as you live.

You can, y’know?

Synchronicity Strikes Again

I am gearing up for taking my Therapy business Full Time and the Universe is helping me along. The first thing I found this week was an old Vision Board saying I would be leaving my day job in October 2018. It was not really wrong as I'm leaving it in November 2018! In my head though I was  going to be there for another 2 years.

Also the Company I distribute the Sun Ancon Chi machines from changed their way of working and I now have to buy wholesale and then deliver to clients. I wondered how I would get the money up front to do this and the Universe has provided it. I have also longed to take it to busy stressful offices to give staff some relief as I have done in my own office in the past. I will now be able to do this in the new year. If you know of any offices in Edinburgh who have space for 3 people to lie down who may be up for this then please get in touch with me.

I then wanted something added to my website but as it is a few years old it did not want to play ball. I was introduced to a web designer who will not only sort this but do a lot more, including enabling me to sell my meditation videos from the site as well as making it mobile friendly. So many people these days search online through their mobiles.

I have so many things I want done in my house and I will have the time to get these done too as well as spending more time doing the things I want to do. So although it was a shock to find myself deciding to leave work, now I am excited that it's just around the corner.

For anyone in the Edinburgh area I have opened up therapy availability until I go full time so get in touch if you want to try Reiki, Crystals or The Thermotherapy equipment that uses Infrared red rays which can go deep into the skin to help with pain. I also have a special offer of 4 sessions of reiki for the price of 3 to be used by the end of the year. You can even share with friends.

Sometimes Life Throws You A Curved Ball

Sometimes life throws us a curved ball which makes us take a look at where we are. I was recently off work due to hurting my back. When I returned to work it was obvious that my back was not up to sitting in a chair all day. Due to this I decided to leave work and my last day will be on 31st December 2018. I will start 2019 in a totally different place as I have decided to become a Full time Therapist. The interesting thing was for years I thought my back would not stand up to seeing clients all day. When I did the maths I found that I did not require to do this. I love reiki and very often am found chatting for up to an hour after a therapy session. I decided I did not wish this to change. I do not want to be rushing a client out to see the next one.

I was speaking to a client at the weekend who asked me when she should return. I told her what I tell everyone- when they decide they need more reiki. In the past I have had contact with a company who said to me "You must come for 8 sessions".  I have to say it didn't work for me. I think many times reiki can work in one session, but everyone is different and knows their own body and mind. I have clients who become depressed. I may not see them for 6 months until they feel the need for a boost of reiki. For this reason, even when it becomes my full time job I will not change my way of working.

I am looking forward to 2019 but will be opening up a bit more time for clients before then so do get in touch if you would like a session and remember I do have additional therapies. You can have Crystals, Thermotherapy with the Soqi Hothouse and Heat pad, Reiki and The Sun Ancon Chi machine. I am also now recording both meditation videos for adults and children and little stories for the children with their names in them. So far I have done one for gratitude and social isolation including bullying. Get in touch if you would like one of these done for someone you know or yourself.

I am also a distributor for the Sun Ancon Chi machine so get in touch if you wish to purchase one.

We all have to make the best of our life. If you get thrown a curved ball, see what life changes you can make too.

Gift vouchers are also available for  both therapies and Workshops.

Living In The Moment

Today I was walking beside work and saw brown leaves falling from the trees. These are the first I have seen that shows that Autumn is on it's way. We are almost three quarters of the way through 2018 and for most of us it has gone quickly. This year I decided not to have any New Year Resolutions. I often find we break them quite quickly anyway. I decided instead that I would take the year as it came and enjoy doing what I do. Now you may think that is not good enough, but so many opportunities came my way and I feel that I have done more this year than in previous years.

Sometimes when we put ourselves under pressure to do or not do a specific thing, all that happens is we feel weak and that we have let ourselves down, when something stops us taking the action. Instead, if your aim was to lose weight for instance, you may find doing things on the spur of the moment and being happy will do one of two things. It will either stop you worrying about your weight because you are out and about enjoying yourself and having fun, or because you are out rather than sitting at home binge eating, the weight will come off.

As we get closer to the end of the year, learn to live in the moment and accept invitations that come your way. We only have one life so enjoy it rather than worrying about changing yourself.  The trees, live and shed automatically, just as you do. The only difference is everyone can see this. With yourself, only you need to be aware of the internal changes that come from being happy. One point to take from the trees is they change throughout the year and bend with the wind. Change is good -so don't stay stuck in one state. Embrace any opportunities that arise and enjoy life.

Here is a good song to listen to Living in the moment.

Beautiful Colours, Beautiful Thoughts

What are you grateful for today? I  love the fact that the garden is full of colour. Looking out my front window I can see trees and hedges with different colours of green. In the  side garden I have orange Crocosmia, pink Roses, yellow Polyanthus, purple Lavender, pink / red Honeysuckle. I also have bushes that have flowered and now have the green leaves on them, and that's just in my side garden!

Inside my house I have trailing plants that are great for putting out Oxygen as well as good to look at.  If I look out my back garden then I am grateful to see all the plants that a neighbour planted for me including a fir tree that I love.

I have barely left my home in the last few weeks due to hurting my back but I think as long as you are surrounded by colour it can make life more interesting. Sometimes you may not be able to do all that you want but it makes me happy if I can appreciate things around me.  Even if you don't have a garden, plants in the home are good for your health so why not grow a few more. My only problem just now is all the emails I'm getting from a plant company, but know I cannot do any planting just now. Never mind, there's always next year!

I often hear from people that I am a positive person.  You can be too. It all starts with a thought and for me, reiki too. Remember that how you think will change how you feel!

Change Your Mindset, Change Your Life

Today I want to talk  to you about the different types of people that may be in your life. If you have read The Celestine Prophecy you will be aware of 4 personality types. They are:

1.The Intimidator
2. The Aloof
3.The Interrogator
4. The Poor me

I'm sure we all know someone who is an Intimidator. They control you by being in charge and making you feel fearful. They intimidate you and are generally not nice to be around. Perhaps if you don't do what they want you may lose your job! You may be unlucky to work around this type of personality. The solution is to try and remove them from your life.

The Aloof person attracts your energy to bring attention to themselves then withdraws. How about these people that post on social media that something terrible has happened or they are at the hospital but don't say any more? They then have every one posting "How are they? What's wrong?". Of couse you are left hanging without getting an answer. You might also ask how their day was and the only response you get from them is "Fine".

The Interrogator can be similar to the Intimadator but makes you question yourself.  They are never happy with whatever actions you have taken as they would have done differently. They will say things like " Why did you do that?" They will keep asking until they get answers from you, even if it's something you don't want to talk about. You may also find they constantly criticise you, always finding fault. It is one way for them to feel better about themselves.

The Poor me was me until I recognised this after reading The Celestine Prophecy. I was in a no money, bad roof, recently become a single mum situation. I was one of those people that if 2 things had gone wrong I was waiting for the 3rd? How many people do you know that think like that? I can think of loads. A poor me just wants someone to change their situation but it is really up to them to do this, not others. Even if you are sick and in bed, you can start by reading Self help books to change your Mindset.

Once you become aware of the different types of people around you it allows you to wake up and make changes in your life. My awakening was accelerated by learning reiki and I am now a totally different person to what I was all those years ago. Don't let people take charge of your lives, or if you see yourself as one of these personality traits, let this be a wake up call. We CAN all change our lives.

Teaching Children Meditation and How to be Confident

This week I had a special visitor. Up till 5 years ago I hosted Foreign Language students in my home. One of my students from 9 years ago was visiting Edinburgh this week and dropped in to see me. He was someone I always remembered, as when he arrived he brought me a purple scarf and on leaving he bought me The Reiki Bible with lovely words from him inscribed inside. He was a teacher and I always thought his students were so lucky to have him. While he was staying with me, he kept buying books and eventually sent 2 very large boxes full back to Spain. All purchased with his own money. Roll on 9 years and he is now the Deputy Head teacher of his school. He also told me they have introduced Mindfulness for his students from age 3 onwards. Like me, he believes if you teach them early it will set them up for life.

He is also aware that children learn more from interactive actions rather than sitting learning only from books. We discussed that children pick up languages much faster when they are younger. Each year his school brings in a teacher from another country to work with the children so they are constantly learning new languages. I only wish we had longer together as I loved hearing about how his school was being run. I truly believe that if children can learn ways to support themselves that they will grow up to be more confident adults.

I have trained my Grandchildren in reiki and can see the difference it has made to their families lives. I only wish I had learned earlier as I think my life would have turned out differently. Hopefully I would have got to where I am now but in a much easier way! My Grandchildren also love meditations that I put together for them. We have to remember that as well as all the learning they do as they are growing, they also need ways to escape too. This may mean having their heads stuck in a book, meditating or doing something they love. The most important thing is to help them enjoy their childhood as well as helping them learn for the future, but in the right way. All schools should take a lesson from how Juan's school is run. I think Meditation should be taught in all schools. It helps with all the stresses and strains of modern day life. If you are interested in teaching meditation to your own children or your school children I would highly recommend Calm Kids by Lorraine Murray.

If you would be interested in me making a personal guided Meditation for your child, or as a present for another, you can get in touch with me either through Facebook  or my website.
